TRACK AND FIELD NEWS

2013 the year for injuries and a year of athletes to struggle to make it to state. Years of practice go into this moment for only a few seconds of glory. The St. Mary’s Academy track and field team was plagued with twisted ankles, hamstring pulls, broken collar bones, and back problems. Through all of this, the Belles still managed to go to Austin, Texas and compete in the Texas Relays to bring home the gold in their division for the 4x200, 4x100 and the silver in the 4x4. Months later they became league champions with Sierra Peterson in the 100m & 200m sprints 2nd leg for the 4x1. The Belles dominated the Division 4 finals. Rachel Toliver, a senior who also suffered from an ankle injury, triple jumped all the way to the silver but there was a tie and it went to down to the milimeter at the State Championships in CLOVIS CA May 31st & June 1st 2013. Sierra was not so lucky due to her nagging back injury which followed her all season. She ran the prelims for the 4x1 which then ended her Jr. year season. She was too tight to do the prelims for the 200m. and false started. “Ill recover and come back next year” she stated as she was carried off of the track and into the medical tent. What a year for the Belles. They will come back with vigor next season primed and ready to go!
